Affairs Chocolate & Desserts Shutters After 28 Years in UP

Affairs Chocolate & Desserts on Bridgeport Way and 27th Street West has closed for good, after 28 years in the community.

A lot can happen in 28 years.

Birthdays, funerals, weddings, Valentine's gifts and the occasional chocolate pick-me-up--Affairs Chocolate & Desserts founder Gay Landry has seen it all.

That's why the cafe's last day on March 16, 2013 was such a shock to the community.

Love and blessings to all of you for your loyalty, friendship, support, hard work, and mostly for your love of chocolate. I will miss you all; your laughter, the loud wild kitchen, the fun of the dining room. We've laughed, cried, raised our children, married, had babies, made fast friends, lived and died, helped each other, solved a million problems together, and all the while enjoyed a lot of good food and good company. You've all been my world for 28 years. To thank you all for your support is an understatement. I love you all.

In an interview with The Tacoma News Tribune, Landry said that the recession had a huge impact on her business. Coupled with growing debt, it became hard to make ends meet.

"I've wracked my brain as to why a restaurant can't survive in University Place," Landry told the TNT.

Patch stopped in to the cafe quite a bit during our last two years in the community and we will miss University Place's love "affair" with chocolate.
