UP For Art Celebrates A Decade Of Success

The nonprofit organization behind much of UP's public art welcomes citizens to a reception Tuesday. Please rsvp by Friday to attend.

Grassroots efforts nourish our "Patch" here in University Place, which makes it a pleasure to see UP for Art reach a milestone.

The group is a decade old, and its members helped grow and nurture it.

Those members, including President Lori Forrest, invite you to a reception 7 p.m., Tuesday at to celebrate their successes, enjoy refreshments and discover what exciting plans they have for the future.

Mayor Debbie Klosowski helped start this nonprofit, volunteer-run organization in 2000. Along with other members who believe in the value of acquiring public art, she helped it forge a partnership with city government.

"Looking back," Klosowski said, "UP for Art has done an incredible variety of projects to help promote public art in our community."

She noted such prominent pieces as "Sharing" by John Jewell, and the "Eagles' Nest" by Douglas Granum. Then there was the duck sculpture by Georgia Gerber, unveiled in Market Square Plaza last fall to honor Terry Reim. Thanks to UP for Art, the public can have access to, and enjoy, these works.

"Promoting local artists, developing an online Guide to Public Art, and encouraging local businesses and developers to incorporate art into their projects are also among the group's accomplishments," Klosowski said. She said she feels that art is important for a number of reasons.

"Art can inspire, encourage discussion and interaction," she added. "Art is also a significant aspect of economic development, attracting businesses as well as enhancing the appearance of the community."

Citizens who join  UP for Art as guests at the reception on Tuesday night might be enticed to join this beneficial organization in another way: as members. You can help make a difference.

If you wish to attend, please rsvp to upforart@gmail.com  by Friday.
