The Tacoma Musical Playhouse proudly presents another regional premiere production this season with the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the 1985 Steven Spielberg film), The Color Purple. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, this inspiring family saga tells the unforgettable story of Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years leads her to find the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.

A story of hope, The Color Purple is a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life. In this first locally-produced staging of this show, TMP has assembled a cast of 32 actor/singers lead by the incomparable Stacie Calkins as ‘Celie’, Tena DuBerry as ‘Shug Avery’, Vincent Orduña as ‘Mister’, Ashanti Proctor as 'Nettie', Antonia Darlene as ‘Sofia’ and Justin Thornton as ‘Harpo’.

The Broadway production was nominated for eleven 2006 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.

TMP’s The Color Purple runs for 14 performances March 9-April 1, 2012. It plays Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, and Saturday 3/24 & 3/31 at 2 pm. All seating is reserved, so advance purchase is strongly recommended. Matinee performances, in particular, are filling very quickly.

Ticket prices are $27 for adults and $25 for seniors, students and military. Student Rush prices ($20) are always available for all Opening Weekend performances and a group rate is available for groups of 10 or more. Be sure to check out TMP’s special "Club Night" and "Date Night" offers on the website. The Color Purple is not recommended for theatergoers under age 13.
