Emergency Food Network Hoping For Nourishment From Empty Bowls Event

Two-day art event adds show focusing on local artists in its first year at Charles Wright Academy.

Emergency Food Network is cooking up new things for this weekend’s Empty Bowls, an annual art event that raises money to feed hungry people in Pierce County.

For the first time, the two-day event will be held at Charles Wright Academy, 7723 Chambers Creek Road West in University Place.

This year brings the addition of an art show called “Vessels,” which will focus on works from regional artists. The pieces will be judged and auctioned on Friday night. Tickets are $25 and light hors d’oueveres will be served at Charles Wright’s Performing Arts Center.

Saturday, the traditional Empty Bowls event will be held in the school’s gymnasium, beginning at 1 p.m. However, it is not uncommon for a long line to form before the doors open – regular attendees have long maintained that the best bowls are sold the quickest.

Local potters, carvers and glass workers are making more than 1,000 bowls to sell for the event, and local restaurants will contribute soup for attendees. On the menu this year are offerings from Infinite Soups, Adriatic Grill, Asado, The Swiss, Pacific Grill, Chambers Bay and PLU Catering.

“We are extremely excited and grateful on so many levels to so many people—from the potters and artists of other mediums, to the restaurants, to our planning committee and our sponsors,” said EFN Development Director Jeff Klein in a news release. “With the addition of the art show, we now have two fun events that not only raise money to feed people, but also showcase the talent of local artists.

EFN, which serves 67 food banks, hot-meal sites and shelters across the county, expects to distribute 18 million pounds of food this year – 4 million more pounds than in 2010.

The organization’s network of feeding programs sees 147,000 visits in Pierce County each month. EFN resources, warehouses and distributes more than 80 percent of food at the county’s food bank, and is able to turn every $1 donated into $12 worth of food.
