WHIZ KID UPDATE: Charles Wright Wins State History Championship

Charles Wright Academy wins top honors at the state history contest based on the achievement of all ten students that advanced from the regional competition. This is an update on the regional success of the CWA History National History team.

Whiz Kid(s) Charles Wright Academy State History Championship Team

 Accomplishments: was named the state’s most outstanding high school at the 2011 Washington State National History Day competition, based on the success of all ten of the school’s competitors. Sophomore Tarriers Devika Agrawal and Stephanie Stacy won first in state for their group website on Karen Ann Quinlan, and junior Katie Welch won first in state for her individual website on the London Charter. All three will advance to the national competition in Washington DC.

In addition, freshman Connor Quisenberry place third with his exhibit on the Six Day War and freshman Scott Kihara placed fifth with an exhibit on obscenity in music. Fellow freshman Will Walkey created a documentary on Curt Flood and free agency in professional baseball, Miriam Donner and Claire Wiley created an exhibit on human rights, and Rick Samuelson and Drake Birnbaum built a website an the Treaty of Versailles. They all contributed to the team title.

Coaches: History teacher Nick Coddington, staff member Althea Cawley-Murphree, and junior Sarah Sadlier.

Awesomeness: More than 6,000 Washington state middle and high school students participated in National History Day this year and 544 competed at the state contest after qualifying at seven regional contests. The contest theme was Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.
