Sunnyside Beach (Steilacoom)

Why here: Located right on Puget Sound (and nearby), this awesome saltwater beach park offers sunny fun, BUT also has some beautiful large shady trees and a fantastic covered picnic/barbeque area. Grab your picnic blanket and plant yourself under one of the trees, take in the stunning view, and feel the cooling breeze blowing in from the Sound. Bliss.

(University Place)

Why here: Located in the heart of University Place, this pretty park offers lots of coolness (and it's not just the serenity and foliage). This park offers sweet relief from the sun under it's canopy of trees. With all the eateries nearby, bring a cool treat and come chill out.

The trails and picnic shelters at Point Defiance Park (Tacoma)

Why here: Three words: old growth forest. The interior and exterior walking trails offer a nice umbrella from the blazing sun under their  canopy of branches. Exterior trails get a little extra cooling from their proximity to the Sound (plus amazing views). Nestled under the trees, the covered picnic shelters (along Five Mile Drive) give you lots of shade. An early daytime hike and a nice cool beverage afterwards. Nice.

Pierce County Libraries (University Place, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Steilacoom)

Why here: Sometimes, you just need to get inside to beat the heat. How about popping into one of the great libraries we have? It's nice and cool in there on a hot day. Want to add some cooling elements to your experience? Check out a book about things that just scream cool: skiing, mountains, snow, ice cream....Well, you know what we mean. Stop sweating and enjoy the escape.

Spraygrounds and Wading Pools (Tacoma Metro Parks)

Why here:  What would you rather do? Spray yourself with a garden hose to cool down or go to the sprayground and get cool in fun and in style? Tacoma Metro Parks offers multiple spraygrounds and wading pools all around town. For a quick drive, get sprayed, sloshed, squirted, and dumped on from head to toe with nice cool water with the kiddos. It's free and it's fun.
