The List: Five Places To People Watch

What's fun, interesting and totally free? People-watching, of course. And we sure have people around town. Lots of them. The List gives you some primo locations for catching a good view this week.

We love to look at other humans. It's in our nature. The sport of people-watching allows a chance to do so without either party feeling too awkward.

People-watching stirs the imagination, promotes good conversation and helps us explore our world. Yeah, right. Who I am kidding? We do it because it's fun. So, grab a coffee and a snack, bring a friend or two, and let's explore some great places to, um, take in the action.

1. Starbuck's in Tacoma's Proctor District (corner of 26th and Proctor).

Why here: A fabulous viewing spot for foot traffic throughout this business district. This is the meet-up place for this neighborhood. Lots of dog walkers, families, students, couples, and singles. Try it on a Saturday (especially when the Proctor Farmer's Market is running).

2.

Why here: Although people might be less-inclined to stop and chat during their daily run or jog, this is a great place to watch University Place residents enjoy their surroundings. It's also a great place for dog-watching, as canines of all kinds follow (or lead) their owners along the trail to do their business. Good fun for all.

3. The Tacoma Mall

Why here: Everyone uses the Tacoma Mall at some point, right? Plant yourself on some comfy couches in the mall's central area and watch shoppers and mall walkers to your heart's content.

4. UW Tacoma Campus area, downtown Tacoma

Why here: Find a bench in the heart of campus or hang out near the UW bookstore on Pacific Avenue with your java and taken in the hustle and bustle of student life, urban hipsters, business people, tourists and downtown patrons.

5. Ruston Way, Tacoma Waterfront

Why here: This beautiful locale is teeming with urban life. Walkers, joggers, baby strollers, dogs, hand holding couples, bikers, rollerbladers, restaurant patrons, scuba divers, boaters, volleyball players, frisbee throwers, picnickers, and everything else. Whew! You really will see it all here.

6. Owen Beach Promenade, Point Defiance Park

Why here: Along the promenade at Owen's Beach is the perfect spot to people watch along the walkway itself, out on the water, or down on the beach. Got a sunny day? Great! This place draws out the people like little drops of sunshine. You won't be disappointed (especially when you see someone in a bathing suit in March on a infrequent sunny day).
