Storm Blows Through UP, Puget Sound

Officials estimate winds at 40 miles per hour. Power company reports 54,000 homes without electricity.

Wind is howling in University Place and across the Puget Sound region right now. Officials estimate winds around 40 miles per hour. Those who attended tonight's UP City Council meeting heard branches and pine cones smashing into City Hall. Power outages are being reported in North Tacoma, Olympia and elsewhere.

Tacoma Power reported 54,000 homes had lost power, including portions of UP. Bridgeport Way West, for instance, was without power about 10 p.m. Branches lay in the middle of the street, and fallen leaves swirled in the air.

The National Weather Service in Seattle reports that University Place residents can expect the rain to continue Tuesday.
