QUESTION: What Are Your Favorite Memories Of Ivan The Gorilla?

The iconic gorilla spent 27 years at the B&I Shopping Center, which is now in Lakewood.

Sad news today, longtime South Sounders.

Ivan the Gorilla, who sat perched at the for some three decades before being moved to Atlanta, died today.

He was 50 years old.

For anyone who has lived in the South Sound for a long time, the mere mention of "Ivan" generates plenty of memories. Some are better than others.

I remember locking eyes with Ivan in B&I and waving to him. He never waved back. Still, I loved that mammal and was pretty bummed when he left the region, even though it was for the best.

We ask you, Patch users, what are your favorite memories of Ivan The Gorilla? Tell us in the comments below.

"When Ivan was first put in the same room with the two female gorillas, there was a lot of chasing and screaming, bristling and batting." Thanks SA!

The News Tribune is reporting that Ivan's ashes will be returned to WA, per the request of the family who owned him. Apparently the zoo he was living at asked to keep his body to study it but the family "wanted him to rest in peace." http://www.thenewstribune.com/2012/08/23/2266146/zoo-atlanta-to-return-ivan-the.html

A few years ago my Husband & I drove down to the Atlanta Zoo just to see Ivan the Gorilla. We both remembered going to the B&I store to see Ivan. My Husband's Grandma used to take him down there to see Ivan when he was a kid and I used to take my kids to B&I all the time when we lived down at Fort Lewis. When we got to the Atlanta Zoo we couldn't get a glimpse of Ivan so we went and asked one of the zoo keepers about him. After telling them that we used to go see him in Tacoma at the B&I, they told us to go back and wait at a certain view point. Especially for us they went in where he was, got on top of the rock that was the entrance to the cave thing where he was. they brought him some goodies and enticed him to come out in the open where we got to see him and enjoy him for quite a while. We thought it was so wonderful of the zoo keepers to do that for us, and they thought it was wonderful of us for making a special trip to see an old friend. This morning I was looking on the Nashville Zoo Facebook site and started thinking about Ivan. When I went to the Atlanta Zoo site to look at the individual pictures of all of their gorilla's Ivan was no longer there. I was hoping it was because they had moved him to another zoo or something like that-although they had made him such a wonderful place to live there. Upon searching the internet I found out he had passed away this past August. It made me sad, but I am sooo glad we had made that special trip down to see him. RIP Ivan!
