Pierce County Library Names Card Design Contest Winners

The winning designs will appear on new library cards at all Pierce County Library System locations.

The votes are finally in! Megan Cannon, 11, Puyallup, Fruitland Elementary, and Katie Howard, 17, Lakewood, Steilacoom High School, will be the featured artists on two new Pierce County Library System cards.

People cast 7,000 ballots in a three-week online vote to select the top design from students in kindergarten through sixth grades and seventh through 12th grades.

The winning designs will appear on new library cards for use by kids, tweens, teens and all ages during the Library’s seventh annual card drive in October. The artists’ names will appear on the printed cards.

This spring, young artists throughout Pierce County vied for the opportunity to design a Pierce County Library card. Nearly 1,000 artists submitted creations in colored pencil, pen, paint, camera and computer-generated art. Professional artists reviewed entries and selected 20 finalists.

Cannon’s watercolor design includes a background script with quotes from books she’s read and highlights two giant flowers growing above the word “READ.”

Howard’s digital design is whimsical with a “Guardians of Ga'Hoole” fantasy book series appeal, featuring an owl reading a book.

The Library will make two different cards, one from each age category: grades K-6 and 7-12.

The 10,000 library cards made with the winning designs will be available for free, in addition to other designs that the Library offers, during the Library’s seventh annual card drive in October 2013.

Congrats, Megan and Katie!
