New Batting Cages In UP Offer Grand Slams And Checkmates

The new business in UP is another recreational offering for families and youth.

It might only be spring training for the big boys, but you now have a local option to hone your skills at the plate.

RedZoneSports—Youth Training and Beyond just opened its doors to our community.

Baseballs teams and individuals can practice in the cages seven days a week for $60 an hour or $40 for half an hour.

Owner Jim Hanigan hopes his business will not only be a place for kids to practice baseball skills, but a place where the community can gather and hold events.

“We are going to be having Friday Quads,” Hanigan said.

No, that’s not a fancy baseball training term, but quads, as in Chess for Life. Checkmate and all.

The facility has an area in the back that can be used for team meetings, board meetings, birthday parties and more.

Hanigan isn’t worried about starting a new business in a down economy. He says he believes in supporting youth.

“We like sports and being involved in youth athletics,” Hanigan said. “It’s better than sitting around playing video games.”

I, as a UP Mom, agree. Getting to the cages is a much better way for kids to spend their time than staring at the television, and I know that University Place’s baseball season is just around the corner.
