MOMS TALK: The Shelves Are Filling With School Supplies

Taking some time off this week from our drab summer, I ventured into the neighborhood Fred Meyer, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. They all are featuring the same new front isle display - school supplies.

Question: How does seeing school supplies on the shelves in the summer make you feel?

Personally, I don't even stop and give them a stare. I walked right on by the flashy new spiral notebooks and sparkle pens. I want no part of these items that bring on the shiver of schedules, routine and projects.

Summer is not suppose to last only 3 weeks — summer is about shorts, flip-flops, spontaneous activities that take us to the water's edge when the sun shows up.

We have all been trying to pull Mr. Sun out by wearing our shorts in 60-degree weather. Flip-flops have been worn to bring hopes of the mist and fog burning off by noon. What are we to do with the coolest July in a decade, and only three days above 80 degrees?

So, as I went to pick up some hard candy, Band-aids and personal items, I caught this newsflash — summer really hasn't hit the South Sound, yet the reality of school is somehow around the corner.

Does buying these items cancel summer? Savings in the bag brings hope during these tight-wad times —but does it signal the turning of the season? If not buying them will extend our summer — that is the road I am taking. I do not care how much savings is on the receipt.

Have you seen these same glossy ads in the paper for school necessities? Does this bring a shiver to your spine? Or are you the type to anticipate the coupon head rush brought on by purchasing items way ahead for a savings?

The supplies are on the shelves like it or not. But Patch wants to know your thoughts about the profit-seeking stores telling us summer is on the way out ... and fall is coming. What do you feel about school supplies hitting the market place?

As for me and my house, we will hold on to the hope that the sun is going to make a late August appearance, and we'll take the risk of delayed school shopping, especially for some sand in the toes and wet towel moments ahead.
