MOM'S TALK: Living A Life Without You

A UP Patch Mom asks how users have prepared for the life their families may lead when they pass away, and whether it's important to keep a will.

As a mother, you are prepared for almost anything that comes your way.

Scraped knees, a trip to the Honey Bucket or a fight about who gets to go down the slide first are all things you can probably fix without thought.

But, have you planned for a world without you in it?

I’m not trying to be insensitive or put you on the defensive, but this is a topic that we often put off. We want to believe it could never happen to us. But, if we keep putting it off until tomorrow, tomorrow may be too late.

Whether you are a single parent or married, you should ask yourself these questions:

Find out what's happening in University Placewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

  1. Who will take care of my children?
  2. Have I talked with those who I’d like to raise my children?
  3. Do I have enough life insurance to cover expenses not only for my children, but for funeral costs and any debt I may have occurred?
  4. If I don’t have life insurance, how much and where should I get a policy?
  5. Will the guardians face a financial burden if they are asked to raise my children?
  6. Will there be an inheritance for my children, and how and when will they receive it?
  7. Are there any specific wishes I have that others may not be aware of and need to be stated?
  8. Do I have a backup plan in case one of my wishes cannot be fulfilled?

These are only a few questions you need to start to ask yourself if you haven’t already.

We as parents can’t assume that everybody already knows our wishes. That’s why we need to be prepared.

Having a last will and testament will lay out exactly what your wishes are in a very difficult time.

Putting the forethought into your future could make living a life without you a little more bearable.

Prepare for the future, because if you don't, who will?
