Mom's Escape: Explore Tacoma's Eclectic And Urban 6th Avenue

Whether you have some time to yourself, want to meet friends or have a date night with your spouse, Tacoma's 6th Avenue business district offers it all.

What are you in the mood for Mom?

Shopping? Dining? Drinks? Live music? Look no further than Tacoma's funky, fun, and lively 6th Avenue. This area is pure Grit City goodness and captures the pulse of an urban oasis. From fine to casual dining, great bars, terrific music venues, quaint shops, great coffee houses, 6th Avenue is bustling with opportunities to make the most of your time without your kids.

Here are some of my favorite hot spots on the avenue broken down by category. Click on the links to get more great information about each business.

Want some retail therapy? Go tropical and have fun at Aloha Oasis Hawaiian Store which features goods islands. Check out Posh Home for interesting and stylish furnishings and accessories for the home. Turntable Treasures and House of Records will inspire awe in music lovers. Looking for more? Hungry? My favorite restaurant in town, Asado (Argentian inspired cuisine) is a great place to dine with girlfriends for lunch or a romantic dinner with your partner. Primo Grill, one of the great original restaurants on the avenue, offers a fabulous menu. Crown Bar is pub grub at it's finest. And the Old Milwaukee Cafe boasts huge classic American breakfast fare. There are lots of eateries on 6th Avenue. Click here for even more options for every taste palette.

Thirsty? Try The Red Hot or The Engine House No. 9 for tasty and refreshing beers from around the Sound (and the world!). Each joint offers food (the Red Hot is known for their hotdogs and even have veggie ones!). For great coffee and tea, check out the new Caffe Dei (which also has a terrific line-up of vegan and vegetarian fare). This is a great place to meet a friend and unwind. Try the amazing margaritas at Masa.

Like music? Look at Jazzbones and Chopstix for some terrific live music options. These venues are great fun with buddies or as a couple.

Upcoming seasonal events? You bet! In the spring and summer, the 6th Avenue Farmer's Market is up and running. Watch local chefs purchase fresh fare from your local farms. (Added bonus: if you need to bring the kids in tow, this market is family friendly with kids activities, live music, and great food). In the summer, watch for Art on the Ave. A terrific urban and arts festival that takes over the neighborhood .
