Meet Susie Haney, One Of The People Behind University Place's Greenery

The parks and recreation employee - who has been with the city since 2005 - brought plenty of experience with her.

Susie Haney has worked for the City of University Place parks department since 2005.

However, her work with plants and flowers spans way beyond that.

Prior to joining the city, she was at McCord Air Force Base (now part of Joint Base Lewis-McChord) for more than three years, maintaining its planting beds, lawns, ball fields, as well as floral presentations for visiting VIP’s. She also has had greenhouse experience with Pierce County parks' grounds division working out of their greenhouses where she raised the various flowers that the county uses. The next time you are at the County-City building and see the various rose beds there, you may think of Susie, as she had a lot to do with them.

For a time, she also was the Community Gardens Coordinator for Metro Parks, where she ran their Pea Patch Program, grew plants for their parks and the Wright Park Conservatory.

Susie is completing her Arborist Certification. She is also one of the certified city employees in the use of herbicides.

While staying at home raising her son, she managed to restore 2.5 acres of wetlands, teach classes about wetlands to children, as well as teaching preschool. As one might suspect, her non-work interests include gardening, camping, her son’s athletics and her church.

Susie has a wealth of experience and knowledge that she is willing to share. If you have a gardening/turf question, she is more than willing to chat with you. Just ask her when you see her among the flowers and ball fields within UP.
