Mayor's Absence From Duck Daze Solved

Some in Saturday's crowd wondered where was Debbie Klosowski, a regular supporter of the event.

It was a question that some at Saturday's community festival just had to wonder.

Where was Mayor Debbie Klosowski?

She's one of University Place's biggest boosters of community events, volunteering for everything from the Curran Apple Orchard to an off-leash dog park.

So her absence was especially glaring, as City Council members participated in Saturday's parade and shook hands with constituents.

Several Patch users posed this question: Where was the mayor?

On Monday night, Klosowski told Patch that, in fact, she wasn't at Saturday's festival.

But the reason for her absence - at least to any parent - is pretty understandable.

Her daughter is a junior at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. This past weekend, her daughter had a clarinet recital, which meant Klosowski would have to miss Duck Daze.

"This is the first one I've ever missed," she said.

But that doesn't mean the spirit of Duck Daze didn't follow her over the mountain passes. On Friday, as she was traveling through Ellensburg, she noticed a giant paper mache on a trailer.

The paper mache was in the shape of, you guessed it, a bright yellow duck.

Klosowski said she considered towing it back to UP in time for the parade but decided against it.
