Join The Global Effort For A Cleaner Planet By Riding Your Bike On Saturday

The Tacoma Wheelmen Bicycle Club is sponsoring a "Bike Ride for a Cleaner Planet," which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Narrow Park And Ride outside of University Place.

South Sound bicyclists will join a global effort to rid our dependence on fossil fuels Saturday, and it all starts right outside of University Place.

The Tacoma Wheelmen Bicycle Club is sponsoring a "Bike Ride For Clean Planet" at 9:30 a.m., at the Narrows Park And Ride, 7201 Sixth Avenue, in West Tacoma. The 26-mile ride is part of a global effort called, “Moving Planet,” which is a one-day rally advocating solutions to the climate crisis by calling for the world to go beyond fossil fuels.

In all, organizers have planned 1,000 rides in 158 counties.

In Tacoma, the ride ends back where it starts at the Narrows Park and Ride. In fact, the first half of the 26-mile loop is scheduled to be designated primarily as bike boulevards by 2012. The segment will connect the Westgate Plaza in Tacoma’s West End and Wright Park in downtown to Parkland.

Organizers welcome casual riders. They can cycle the whole route or just part of it.

In addition, students with Curtis High will volunteer for the event.

“Moving Planet” was conceptualized by 350.org, a global campaign and network that works with grassroots organizers in 188 countries to mobilize against climate change.
