Frugal Family: Great Buys For Parents

Patch scours the South Sound to help find deals that can save parents a buck or two.

These days, we’re all watching every dollar. From coupons to Craigslist, local families are taking advantage of a variety of deals to stretch their budgets even further.

This weekly column is dedicated to giving you five great local deals each week that will help your family save money, and, since we are doing the legwork for you, save time, too.

Your guide for this low-cost journey is a self-proclaimed coupon queen who can empty the Baby Gap’s sales racks and the cereal aisle at Safeway for mere dollars.

1. Shoemall.com
The deal: Snag a great deal on shoes for the whole family during this 48-hour sale with a 25 percent discount on orders of more than $20 and free shipping by using the code SAVE25 at checkout. Brands include Robeez, Crocs, Steve Madden, Timberland and Adidas.

2. Redbox
The deal: “Like” Redbox on Facebook and then click the freebies tab to get a code for a free movie rental good this Thursday. A great way to relax on a cold night. Deal is valid for those who are already fans. New releases include “Get Low,” “Waiting for Superman” and “Open Season 3”.

3. Borders
The deal: Celebrate Sesame Street’s favorite furry red friend at Elmo’s Birthday Party. This free event, at the Tacoma Borders, 2508 South 38th Street, starts at 2 p.m. and includes games, songs, giveaways and more. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Good through: Feb. 26

The deal: Snag a few $1.39 tacos, bean burritos and bean tostadas at Lakewood’s favorite Mexican eatery, family owned since 1969, every Sunday.
Good through: Ongoing

5. Bumps and Babies Fair
 The deal: Head up to Seattle on Sunday for this giant consignment event featuring new and gently used baby and children’s clothes and shoes, maternity items, toys, furniture and baby gear from moms all over the region. Boutique vendors include Stacey Atkin Photography of Puyallup, Tiptoeing Tutus and Puget Sound Breastfeeding. Doors open at 10 a.m. at the Bitter Lake Community Center Annex, 13040 Greenwood Avenue North.
