Did Gig Harbor Ever Freeze Over? (VIDEO)

A Gig Harbor Patch Facebook user shared a YouTube video that depicts what appears to be the harbor frozen in ice.

Check out this great find posted by a Gig Harbor Patch Facebook user.

"I found this on YouTube today, what a surprise!" wrote user Lynn.

The video shows what appears to be the harbor frozen in ice. It's so cold, in fact, that people are actually walking on the water.

The YouTube video indicates that it was shot in 1949 or 1950. Gig Harbor native and City Councilmember Ken Malich confirmed on Facebook that the video was shot in January 1950.

For all of you long-timers on Patch, can you share some history with the rest of us? Did this actually happen? Tell us in the comments below.

1950...there was a long cold spell so that end of the bay froze solid enough for skating etc. The freeze lasted so long that once the thaw started, schools were closed so that the heavy buses wouldn't ruin the roads as they thawed. Those of us who were young then went to school on Saturday to make up the days lost. Imagine our teachers doing that today :o)

And I'm assuming it was a heavy 1950's-era car, not one of the light ones from today. Amazing. Thanks Mark.

School on Saturday. I bet the kids didn't take too kindly to that...

My question is, how come so many people had ice skates back then? Thanks if anyone has an answer.
