City To Dedicate $26,000 To Community Events Over The Next Two Years

Staff, after hearing from the City Council, suggests dedicating the $13,000 annually to six general areas.

The City of University Place says it will dedicate $26,000 to community events over the next two years.

But that doesn't necessarily those events - everything from the Duck Daza parade to the Christmas Tree Lighting - will get a city sponsorship.

Instead, University Place will provide services such as portable toilets, police support and other indirect costs.

The City Council is scheduled to discuss the direction of its community events funding tonight at its meeting, 6:30 p.m., at .

Over the past few months, city leaders have discussed exactly how to spend its dwindling community events fund. City Manager Steve Sugg has suggested dedicating the money to six specific areas: health, city staff support, police support, waiving of the park rental fee, liability insurance under the city's coverage and use of the UP's website, reader-boards and other public forums.

Any requests for additional staff to things like set up tables would cost the volunteer groups that run the events extra.

The police station - which will be on the second floor of the Civic Building, where the library is currently located - must be ready in time for the police department to move out of its current location at the West Pierce Fire & Rescue Public Safety Building near City Hall.
