VIDEO: University Place Officially Celebrates Its New Police Department
Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday in which officials and the public got to tour the space at the Civic Building at Town Center.
University Place doesn't have a lot in common with New York City.
But, according to Interim Chief Mike Blair, the cities on opposite ends of the country do share one trait - their police departments are woven into the neighborhoods they serve.
The new UP Police headquarters in the Civic Building at Town Center is like a police station in one of NYC's boroughs, where the building is part of a vibrant neighborhood, he said.
In University Place, the new station - for which the community held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday - is located directly above the communtiy's library, and in the future, it will share a building with future City Hall offices and a coffee shop.
