A car fire was extinguished in the University Place Fred Meyer parking lot about 8:30 p.m. Monday evening.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue extinguished a car fire in the Fred Meyer parking lot at about 8:30 p.m. last night.

"The car was driving down the road and started having problems, so they pulled over in the parking lot," said Hallie McCurdy, spokeswoman for WPFR. "Firefighters arrived to find flames under the hood and put the fire out."

University Place Patch user Carl Mollnow saw the fire and took some photos, which he shared with us in the Pics & Clips gallery.

He described the scene in an email to Patch:

The 2004 Chrysler 300 driver by a young man and his family (wife & baby son) was driving Bridgeport when their began to smoke. He pulled quickly off Bridgeport and swung into the parking lot in a vast empty space at the north end of the FM complex, got his wife and son out of the smoking car and opened the hood to see what was going on. Upon opening the hood, flames shot high into the night sky and fully engulfed the front half of the car with flames growling 15 feet straight up. The Fire Dept. got there a few minutes later and quickly brought the flames under control. To complete the fire suppression job, fireman using a large gas powered portable cut-off saw cut off the hood and finished dousing the flames which melted much of the engine and the windshield.
