Curtis' Carr Named Lacrosse Player Of The Week

Curtis High's  was named the Player of the Week by Washington State Lacrosse.

Carr — who will attend the Air Force Academy in the fall — erupted for 16 points, including 10 goals and six assists, against the Vikings' wins against Seattle Prep and Mukilteo, as well as its loss to Skyline.

SEATTLE – Curtis High School’s Colby Carr, Wenatchee High School’s Mitchell Parks, Eastside Catholic School’s Alex Foreman and Garfield High School’s Linnea Whisman were named by US Lacrosse as Washington High School Players of the Week for the week of March 28 – April 3.   

Parks, who also received the award for the week of March 21 – 27, is the first player in the 33-year history of high school lacrosse in Washington state to earn back-to-back Player of the Week honors.

The US Lacrosse Washington High School Player of the Week in Boys and Girls Division I and II is selected based on exceptional performance and sportsmanship on the field of play by the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association and the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association. The award is presented weekly by the Washington State Chapter of US Lacrosse and the Washington Stealth.

The players of the week will be honored by the Washington Stealth this Saturday, April 9 at their home game with the Minnesota Swarm.  The game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at Everett’s Comcast Arena.  To learn more about US Lacrosse Washington High School Player of the Week visit www.StealthLAX.com .

Boys Division I

Colby Carr

University Place, Wash. – Senior, Midfield, Curtis High School

Curtis senior Colby Carr scored 16 points including 10 goals and 6 assists, while collecting 17 ground balls to lead Curtis to a 2-1-0 record during the week.    In the Vikings’ 19-6 win over Seattle Prep, the 5-10, 170 pound midfielder netted 4 goals and 3 ground balls.  The following night in a 14 – 2 win over Mukilteo, Carr again put the ball in the net, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.  In Curtis’ loss at Skyline he scored 2 goals. 

On the lacrosse field, Carr earned third team All-State honors as a junior, leading the Vikings to the state quarterfinal round.  As a versatile athlete, Carr was named to the Curtis High School Top 20 All-Time Divers list as a freshman and played water polo for the Curtis club team as both a freshman and sophomore. 

In the classroom, Carr maintains a 3.30 GPA and is enrolled in Advanced Placement government and statistics courses, while serving as an ASB inter high school representative for Curtis High School.  In the community he coaches 7th and 8th grade lacrosse players and during Christmastime partners with other classmates through Curtis Leadership where he helps coordinate its program to identify, procure and deliver Christmas presents to families-in-need of middle and grade school youth within the University Place School District.           

Carr has received an appointment to the US Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs where, following high school graduation, he will play Division I lacrosse and prepare for a career serving his country as a fighter pilot.                                           

Boys Division II

Mitchell Parks

Wenatchee, Wash. – Junior, Midfield, Wenatchee High School (Wenatchee Valley)

Wenatchee High School junior midfielder Mitchell Parks is the first player in the 33-year history of high school lacrosse in Washington state to receive back-to-back Player of the Week honors.  During the week, Wenatchee’s leading scorer contributed 14 points, and 43 ground balls in his team’s home field wins over Three Rivers, Blanchet and Nathan Hale.  His 3 goals, 2 assists and 12 ground balls led all scorers in Wenatchee’s 9 – 5 win over eastern Washington rival Three Rivers.  In an 11 – 6 win over Blanchet, he netted 3 goals, 3 assists and 17 ground balls.  The following day, in a 14 – 4 win over Nathan Hale, Parks netted a goal, 2 assists and 14 ground balls.

 Parks was one of the original youth to embrace lacrosse in the Wenatchee Valley, starting play in 2006 as a 6th grader.  A starter for Wenatchee Valley Lacrosse as a sophomore and junior, the 5-8, 130 pound Parks was named First Team All-State in Division II high school lacrosse as a sophomore and was named team MVP Salisbury University’s All-World Lacrosse Camp.  In 2009, as a freshman he was the only eastern Washington player selected to the Washington Under 15 team that played at the U-15 National Championships in Baltimore.

In the classroom, Parks maintains a 3.71 GPA while taking a full load of advanced placement and honors classes.  When he’s not hitting the books, Parks studies classical guitar, plays alto sax in the school band and participates in Earth Club, a group of Wenatchee High students focused on environmental stewardship in the Wenatchee Valley.  He is also involved in Upper Valley Connections, which helps mentally-challenged youth and young adults participate in sports, Salvation Army Christmas gift distribution, Wenatchee Valley’s Make a Difference Day and through his involvement in the Wenatchee High School French Club, visited 7 eastern and western European countries in 2007.   

Girls Division I

Alex Foreman

Sammamish, Wash. – Senior, Attack, Eastside Catholic School

In wins over Seattle Prep and Mercer Island, girls Division I leading scorer Alex Foreman secured 22 points including 18 goals and 4 assists on the offensive side of the field and 7 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers in defensive play for the Crusaders.  In Eastside Catholic’s 19 – 18 win at Seattle Prep, Foreman netted 8 goals and 2 assists.  Two days later she scored a season-high 10 goals and 2 assists as the Crusaders upended Mercer Island 18 – 16.

The Eastside Catholic senior maintains a 3.65 GPA while enrolled Advanced Placement and Honors courses.  On the lacrosse field, Foreman was selected first team All-State at the attack position as a sophomore.  As a junior she earned All-State honors as a midfielder, while helping guide the Crusaders to their school’s first lacrosse state championship.

At Eastside Catholic she received second place honors for a documentary that she produced for US National History Day and is working on a similar project for a Bio Ethics class.  In the community,

Foreman helped start the middle school lacrosse program on the Sammamish Plateau and is in her second year as a volunteer coach of the program.  In the summers, the dual US, Canadian citizen works on an organic peach orchard in British Columbia.

Following graduation, Foreman has committed to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Southern California where is expects to study biological sciences and pre medicine.

Girls Division II

Linnea Whisman

Seattle, Wash. – Senior, Attack, Garfield High School

Garfield leading scorer Linnea Whisman scored 15 goals and collected 8 ground balls and 9 draw controls in the Bulldogs’ wins over Holy Names and Mercer Island.  Helping Garfield outscore their opponents 34 – 9 during the week, Whisman netted 5 goals against Holy Names and scored a season-high 10 against the Islanders. 

A highly versatile athlete in the skill positions, Whisman has started 3 of 4 years on the Garfield soccer team, winning a letter as a senior.  On the lacrosse field, the girls Division I All-State second team selection began playing the sport in the 7th grade.  She was elected captain as a senior and with a strong field sense and quick feet has earned a starting role all four years.   In 2010, she was named to the All-Regional lacrosse team.

In the classroom she maintains a 3.4 GPA.  In the community, Whisman is a member of Students Against Violence Everywhere, where she mentors local youth working towards reducing inner city violence.  She also teaches the game of lacrosse to youth in the Seattle community and has traveled throughout Sweden.
